Thank You Notes Never Go Out Of Style

thankyou515514_1280Thank you notes are often viewed as things of the past. Who mails anything anymore after all? The people who are serious in the business world. Thank you notes show that you are serious and that you care about the person that you are sending it to. Use these tips to make yours stand out.

Snail Mail Not Email

Snail mail is slower but email shows a lack of caring and a lack of willingness to engage in the task. Whenever possible send your thank you letter by means of snail mail. If you cannot send your thank you by post, write up a very formal thank you and attach it to your email as a PDF. This allows you to have nice formatting and make it more personalized.

Address It Properly

Never send a thank you letter with a “To Whom It May Concern” greeting. You should always remember the name of the person that you are sending the thank you to. Failure to have the name makes the thank you seam fake and artificial.

Personalize It

Many people who still send thank you letters use a template, a cut and dry version of a letter that they would use for any thank you purposes. Each time you go to send a thank you it should be typed or written new. This allows the letter to appear personalized. It also gives you the chance to add details like how and when the interaction you are saying thank you happened.

Don’t Be Overtly Salesperson

It is fine for your thank you letter to sell you or your product in a light way but it shouldn’t be pushy. Avoid directly selling to the person in the letter. Thank them, recap your interaction, and tell them that you hope to hear from them again. The interview was the time you sold your capabilities, now is the time to sell your people skills.

This doesn’t mean that it is time to stop making yourself the ideal candidate, you just do not want to ruin the value of the thank you letter. You are, after all, thanking the person.

Overcome Objections

While you aren’t trying to sell yourself in the thank you letter it doesn’t mean that you can’t use it to your advantage. When you recap the interaction you had, thank them for pointing out the object and offer a valid explanation or solution. Do not come up with excuses though, no one likes to hear excuses.

When should you send a thank you note in the professional world? Whenever you have reason to thank someone. Just because the internet has evolved into the biggest thing for communication doesn’t mean that it should rule out physical communication. A thank you note on paper shows a lot about you and the kind of person that you are. Shock your future employer or client in a good way.
